Volkswagen’s New Bulli Microbus Integrates iPad.

Volkswagen’s New Bulli Microbus Integrates iPad.

Volkswagen’s iconic hippie Microbus is making a comeback at this year’s Geneva Auto Show and Apple’s iPad plays an integral role in the new vehicle.  The German auto giant first unveiled the Microbus in 1950 and now 61 years later, Volkswagen has packed the latest version with enough new high tech features to bring a smile to the face of hippies everywhere.

The new Bulli Microbus comes equipped with an eco-friendly electronic motor and an integrated iPad control system.  The iPad is centrally located in the Microbus’s center console and serves as the in-car infotainment system.  Driver and passengers can use the iPad to play the car’s stereo system, control navigation features, make hands-free telephone calls and adjust the Bulli’s climate control system.  The iPad also interfaces with the driver’s speedometer and other critical displays to provide an integrated driving information system.

The Bulli’s dashboard features an integrated iPad dock allowing the iPad to be easily removed for additional security when parked or to continue using apps while you’re outside of the vehicle.  The iPad mount also incorporates a centrally-located hazard warning switch, giving drivers quick and easy access to the car’s emergency blinkers.

The Microbus holds a special spot in Apple’s history so it’s fitting that Volkswagen has integrated Apple’s iPad into their newest Microbus.  Back in 1976 two young college students used the proceeds from the sale of their Microbus and HP scientific calculator to start one of the world’s most iconic computer companies.  The two young students were Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak and the company they started was of course Apple Computer.

It was Steve Jobs who sold his treasured Volkswagen Microbus to help raise the $1,300 they needed to begin their first production run. Who knows, maybe Volkswagen will send Jobs a new Microbus to make up for the one he had to give up back in 76.
