Boston chimes in on new iPad.

Boston chimes in on new iPad.

Apple fans are on high alert today as the next-generation iPad is expected to be unveiled this afternoon in San Francisco — and Hub consumers are offering their two cents about the touchscreen tablet.

“I would like to be able to download more than they’re currently offering,” said Anthony Yerdon, 26, of Allston. “You can’t add memory to the current version, which really (stinks).”

Standing outside the Apple Store on Boylston Street yesterday, the South End bartender added: “I’m definitely going to get the iPad eventually though.”

Speculation swirled over today’s anticipated unveiling. Among the open questions is whether ailing Apple CEO Steve Jobs will come off medical leave at least temporarily to show off the company’s latest creation. It’s also unclear when the iPad 2 will hit store shelves.

AppleInsider.com reported yesterday that inventory computers at the electronics retailer Best Buy showed the status of the 16-gigabyte Wi-Fi-only and 3G-capable iPad as “deleted,” stoking speculation that the product launch was imminent.

Another report on MacRumors.com showed a picture of the desktop of the new operating system that appeared to confirm the next iPad will carry a front-facing camera, the Apple Camera App and the Photo Booth App. The new iPad is also expected to be lighter than its 1.5-pound predecessor.

“The major upgrade should be the front-facing camera,” said Avi Langbaum, 60, after leaving the Apple Store downtown.

Langbaum, a commercial builder from San Antonio who was visiting his daughter, is like many consumers who only recently purchased the iPad, making it unlikely he’ll spring for the newer model so soon.

Not all consumers are ready to buy into the market of touchscreen tablets. Among them is Ja’Von Pemberton, 21, an art student living in Allston. The iPhone owner said he views the iPad as a similar device.

“Why get something you can already hold in your hand?” he asked.
