Woman Faces Jail Time, Fine For Feeding Birds
LYNN, Mass. -- An 80-year-old old Massachusetts woman has been criminally charged after refusing to stop feeding flocks of ducks and geese that officials say are littering a pond and park with poop.
The Daily Item of Lynn reports that an assistant magistrate at Lynn District Court on Wednesday charged Claire Butcher with violating a "no trespass" order issued against her in 2009.
City officials say Butcher has created a public health nuisance by bringing large amounts of bread to Flax Pond and has repeatedly ignored a city ordinance forbidding it.
After the decision Wednesday, Butcher told the Item that she won't stop feeding the birds because they "don't belong to the city, they belong to God."
Butcher faces a maximum punishment of a $100 fine and imprisonment of up to 30 days.
