Modern Warfare 3 hits the $1bn mark in record time

The latest game in the Call of Duty franchise reaches $1bn in sales just 16 days after release

The latest title in the Call of Duty game franchise has become the fastest-selling entertainment product of all time, reaching the $1bn (£640m) sales mark one day quicker than blockbuster films Avatar and Harry Potter.

Activision Blizzard's mega-selling title Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has made $1bn in sales within just 16 days of its launch, the software manufacturer revealed on Monday.

The company claims that the title, which notched up $400m in sales within 24 hours of launching on 8 November, has now taken the record for the fastest product to reach the $1bn sales mark.

James Cameron's 2009 3D blockbuster Avatar reached $1bn in ticket sales in 17 days, as did Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two.

"Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture," said Activision Blizzard CEO, Bobby Kotick. "Call of Duty is now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release."

Modern Warfare 3's 2010 predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops, did not reach the $1bn sales mark until almost two months after its launch.

Released worldwide on 8 November, Modern Warfare 3 depicts a near-future war declared on the US and Western Europe by Russian Ultranationalists. The first-person shooter title received near-universal critical acclaim and made $775m with its first five days on sale, despite complaints from some gamers that the title did not innovate on previous instalments.

The sales figures of Modern Warfare 3 are not the only success story for this franchise. The game was released alongside a dedicated social gaming network entitled Call of Duty: Elite, which already boasts 6 million subscribers.

Last month Activision reported that profits tripled year-on-year in the three months to the end of September – figures which exclude the benefit of the newly-released MW3.
