The latest invention of scientists from theFraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS in Dresden is the data eyeglasses that are able to read from the engineer’s eyes the features he needs to observe on the building graph.

This was achieved with the help of a CMOS chipthat features an eye tracker located in themicrodisplay. After connecting the eyeglasses to a PDA you will get the needed information and the head-mounted displays (HMDs) will react to your commands.

“We want to make the eyeglasses bidirectional and interactive so that new areas of application can be opened up,” says Dr. Michael Scholles, business unit manager at the Institute.

Currently a team of researchers at the IPMS is working on a concept device that would include eye tracking system, allowing users to control the content by simply moving their eyes of fixing them of specific point in the picture. With the latest invention like that, users will have the ability to display new information, surf though the menu or move picture elements without using any additional tools.

Scientists managed to incorporate on a CMOS chip – which measures 19.3 by 17 millimeters – both the eye tracker and image reproduction, thus making the data eyeglasses lighter, smaller in size and easy to make. The chip is mounted at the back of the hinge on the temple of the eyeglasses. The technology works as follows: the picture on the small display is projected from the temple onto the user’s retina, the user seeing the image as though it is at a one-meter distance.

This latest invention in technology will help perform a variety of tasks much easier and more accurately. For example, the HMDs may serve well in the medical field, showing surgeons the results of the X-ray or MRT, and in the construction industry, displaying engineers the structure drawings.
